About the Role & Work Environment

Sustainability is a core UNICEF value and a critical enabler of long-term global impact. Through the Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (SCAP), UNICEF is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and advocating for ambitious climate agreements. The Inclusive and Sustainable Operations (ISO) Unit is seeking a dedicated intern to apply a Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) lens to internal operations. Your work will directly inform practical, scalable interventions that translate environmental awareness into sustained, everyday behavioral actions among UNICEF staff worldwide.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evidence Synthesis: Consolidate existing evidence from reports and surveys, organizing findings using behavioral science models (like COM-B) to identify barriers, motivational drivers, and social norms.
  • Behavioral Diagnostics: Formulate clear behavioral problem statements and define priority target behaviors with rationale including feasibility, impact likelihood, and risk.
  • Strategy Development: Draft behavioral objectives and develop high-level intervention concepts, such as nudges, default options, and light-touch prototypes for sustainable practices.
  • Coordination: Support consultations with Country Offices and Green Teams, draft agendas, and align strategies with Communications, HR, and Operations teams.
  • Knowledge Management: Maintain clean documentation of insights, prepare slide summaries, and create final reports outlining actionable behavioral recommendations.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

  • Educational Status: Enrolled in or recently completed (within the last two years) a Master's or advanced degree in Behavioral Science, Psychology, Social & Public Policy, Development Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, or a related field. (PhD-track candidates with practical orientation are also considered).
  • Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with qualitative/quantitative research methods and survey analysis. Proficiency in Microsoft 365 is required. Data visualization, graphic design, and AI tool knowledge are strong assets.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is strictly required. Knowledge of French or Spanish is considered an asset.
  • Logistics: Must have access to a personal computer, required software, and possess the flexibility to work during Central European Time (CET) hours.

Internship Conditions & Remuneration

  • Financial Support: Interns receive a monthly stipend. This is USD 1,700 for interns based in New York, Geneva, or Copenhagen; for all other locations, it is 70% of the net monthly salary of a GS level 3 step 1.
  • Insurance Requirements: Applicants must secure and show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance, as UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs arising from illness or accidents during the internship.
  • Employment Expectancy: The internship is not connected with employment. Interns cannot apply for internal UNICEF posts during their tenure.
