About the Program
Google is invested in increasing the number of future computer scientists and software developers. The Student Training in Engineering Program (STEP) Japan aims to bridge the gap between academic studies and a professional internship. The program is specifically intended for women students who are currently in a Bachelor's degree program and can start working from April 2029 onwards. It offers students the unique opportunity to work on a software project alongside other STEP interns, fully supported by full-time Googlers and a dedicated mentor.
Program Structure
- Part 1: Development Course: The first part focuses on developing technical and soft skills through 8 classes held once a week (every Friday at 5 pm for 3 hours) starting May 15, 2026. Classes will be held mainly in Japanese at the Google Shibuya office. Note: Those unable to participate in the Development Course can still apply to the internship.
- Part 2: STEP Internship: The second half is a paid internship where you will be assigned to a core software project. Starting August 2026 onwards, the internship lasts 8-17 weeks depending on project scope and student availability. You will work with a team of Googlers and be mentored by a Google engineer to guide your journey.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop scripts to effectively automate routine tasks.
- Create and actively support a productive and innovative team environment.
- Work collaboratively with peers, managers, and cross-functional teams to solve technology's greatest challenges.
Eligibility Criteria
- Educational Status: Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program. Preferred candidates are majoring in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Target Demographic: Intended for women students who can start working from April 2029 onwards.
- Immigration: This role is strictly not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
- Programming Experience: Practical programming experience in C, C++, Java, or Python is highly preferred.
- Language Proficiency: English proficiency is a requirement for global collaboration across all roles , while the specific development classes will be held mainly in Japanese.
