The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) wears two institutional hats: it is the specialized health agency of the Inter-American System and also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO). The generic internship roster is published twice a year and connects diverse academic talent with health-related programs, as well as operational areas like communication, external relations, finance, and human resources. Interns can be placed in country offices, regional offices, or the Washington, D.C. headquarters.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a technical expert, interns are assigned projects based on agreed terms of reference that align with their skill sets. Responsibilities typically include:

• Reviewing literature and conducting comprehensive literature surveys.
• Undertaking web research, data collection, and organizing complex data and documents on specific subject areas.
• Participating in the development of new public health tools and guidelines.
• Assisting in drafting, formatting, and editing policy briefs, tool kits, manuals, brochures, and technical reports.
• Assisting in the organization of international workshops, meetings, conferences, and events.
• Actively participating in ongoing, high-impact departmental projects.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

• Educational Status: Candidates must be in the final academic year of a bachelor's degree, enrolled in a master's or doctoral program, or have graduated from any of these programs within the last two years.
• Age Requirement: You must be at least 20 years of age on the date of your application.
• Language Proficiency: Fluency (reading, writing, and speaking) in at least one of PAHO's official working languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French) is strictly required. Local language knowledge is an asset.
• Technical Skills: Familiarity with standard computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. Experience with data analysis and statistical software (like XLStat) is a strong advantage.
• Conflicts of Interest: Applicants must not be related to a PAHO staff member, nor related to an individual working for a national government or local authority (e.g., Ministry of Health personnel).
• Other Restrictions: Candidates must not have previously participated in PAHO's internship program. Additionally, PAHO is a smoke-free environment and does not recruit smokers or users of any tobacco products.

Remuneration & Conditions

• Financial Support: Selected interns will receive a stipend (living allowance). However, interns are fully responsible for financing their accommodation and any necessary visas.
• Insurance: All interns will be covered by insurance for medical expenses, death, and permanent disability at PAHO's expense for the duration of the assignment.
• Future Employment: Interns are not eligible for appointment to any regular position in PAHO for a period of six months following the end of their internship.
