University of Exeter PhD Studentship in Global Carbon Science 2026

Are you an intellectually ambitious scientist ready to tackle one of the most critical blind spots in global climate modelling? The University of Exeter is offering a fully funded, high-impact PhD studentship focused on reshaping how we understand tropical vegetation and carbon budgets. Step into a role where your mathematical and ecological insights will directly influence international climate policy, conservation strategies, and humanity's response to the environmental crisis.

💡 99jobs Pro-Tip: How to Stand Out

To make your application truly unignorable, heavily emphasize your quantitative background—specifically your proficiency in mathematics, statistics, or computational modelling—alongside your passion for environmental science. Because this project involves international collaboration through the CLARITY consortium and real-world policy impact, use your personal statement to demonstrate your ability to act as an independent, collaborative learner who can bridge the gap between complex datasets and actionable climate strategies.

Key Highlights:

  • Organization: University of Exeter
  • Project Title: Transform Global Carbon Science: Model Tropical Vegetation to Reshape Carbon Budgets
  • Reference Number: 5825
  • Duty Station: Exeter, South West England, UK
  • Target Audience: Graduates in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or Natural Sciences
  • Funding: Fully funded UK Home Fees + £21,805 annual stipend (3.5 years)

About the Programme & The Problem Worth Solving

Tropical forests absorb a quarter of human carbon emissions, yet they are being lost faster than scientists can fully understand them. Deforestation, fire-induced degradation, and climate extremes are destroying these vital ecosystems, exposing a massive blind spot in current climate science: our models fail to accurately predict how tropical vegetation responds to these disturbances. This uncertainty (up to ±60%) cascades directly into the Global Carbon Budget—the gold standard dataset guiding international climate agreements. This PhD project aims to solve this pressing problem, working at the critical intersection of mathematics, ecology, and climate science to deliver global impact.

Duties, Research, and Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine advanced models to accurately predict tropical vegetation responses to climate extremes and disturbances.
  • Analyze world-class datasets to reduce the massive uncertainties surrounding land-use and land-cover change in tropical regions.
  • Collaborate with international experts through the CLARITY consortium to translate clever modelling into practical, global climate solutions.
  • Participate in specialized, hands-on training, including a specialist workshop on tropical vegetation dynamics in South Africa (scheduled for April 2026).
  • Master cutting-edge modelling techniques, remote-sensing technology, and advanced climate science methodologies.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

  • Educational Status: Candidates should possess a strong academic background in highly quantitative fields such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, or closely related disciplines.
  • Residency & Funding Status: This specific studentship covers UK home tuition fees. Applicants must be eligible for UK home fee status to receive full funding.
  • Core Competencies: Must be driven by intellectual challenge and real-world applications. The ideal candidate is mathematically rigorous and thrives as a collaborative but independent learner.

Remuneration & The Package

  • Financial Support: The PhD is fully funded for 3.5 years, covering UK home tuition fees and providing a generous, tax-free annual stipend of at least £21,805.
  • Mentorship & Resources: Gain direct mentorship from leading climate scientists and access to complementary NERC-funded projects and world-class datasets.
  • Global Exposure: Includes international collaboration opportunities and travel for specialist workshops (e.g., South Africa).

How to Apply

  1. Ensure your academic background aligns with the rigorous mathematical and scientific requirements of the project.
  2. Prepare a compelling personal statement that clearly connects your quantitative skills to your passion for solving complex environmental and climate modelling challenges.
