About the Role & Environment

The UNESCO Culture Sector aims to promote culture and the creative economy and safeguard cultural and natural heritage in response to global challenges. By implementing the six UNESCO Culture Conventions, the sector supports Member States in translating provisions into national policies. Internships can be undertaken in various highly specialized entities, including World Heritage, Living Heritage, Diversity of Cultural Expressions, Communication, Cities and Events, Culture and Emergencies, and Cultural Policies and Development.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture, interns will contribute to the work of their assigned Unit by performing tasks such as:

  • Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of diverse Culture programmes and activities.
  • Drafting and preparing documents, reports, work plans, briefings, talking points, speeches, and online communication content.
  • Conducting targeted research, compiling data, and carrying out analysis pertaining to the implementation of the UNESCO Culture Conventions.
  • Participating in and providing logistical support for upcoming meetings, training workshops, events, webinars, and conferences.
  • Helping to build and maintain strong working relationships with other Sectors, donors, partners, and international organizations.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 20 years old to apply.
  • Educational Status: You must meet ONE of the following: (1) Enrolled in the 3rd or final year of a Bachelor's degree; (2) Enrolled in a Master's or PhD program; or (3) Graduated from a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program within the last 12 months.
  • Language Proficiency: An excellent command, both written and spoken, of either English or French is strictly required. A working knowledge of the other language is a strong asset.
  • Core Competencies: Excellent computer skills (office-related software), strong interpersonal communication, and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced, international working environment.

Internship Conditions & Entitlements

  • Financials: UNESCO does not remunerate interns. There is no financial compensation for internship assignments.
  • Time Off: Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month, plus an additional 1 working day of leave per complete month of the internship.
  • Insurance: UNESCO provides limited workplace insurance coverage against injury, illness, disability, or death incurred directly attributable to the execution of the internship.
