Post NamePhD Researcher
LocationNottingham, UK
Duration4 Years (Full Time)
Work TypeFully Funded PhD Studentship

About the Role & Work Environment

The University of Nottingham has a long-standing and highly respected engineering research relationship with Rolls-Royce plc. This prestigious PhD studentship is hosted within Nottingham's UTC (University Technology Centre) in Gas Turbine Transmissions Systems, where the successful candidate will join a vibrant community of researchers at various stages of their doctoral studies. Spline couplings are critical power-transmission components that allow torque to be transmitted between two shafts while accommodating relative axial and angular movements. Your research will directly contribute to the development of more power-dense systems, facilitating the increased use and efficiency of high-power electrical systems in modern aviation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Address the specific engineering details and complexities surrounding the wear of articulating splines in aeroengine applications.
  • Develop a comprehensive mechanistic wear model that integrates theoretical, experimental, and numerical studies.
  • Conduct extensive experimental work utilizing a recently commissioned, state-of-the-art rig facility located within the UTC.
  • Validate theoretical modelling tools using real-world data gathered from physical rig testing.
  • Contribute to the broader aerospace engineering goal of reducing the size and weight of transmission systems while significantly boosting power extraction.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

  • Educational Status: The successful candidate must hold a first-class or an upper second-class honours degree specifically in mechanical engineering or a closely related academic subject.
  • Nationality / Funding Restriction: Due to strict funding restrictions associated with this grant, this specific PhD position is only available to UK candidates.
  • Technical Background: A strong capability in theoretical mechanics, numerical simulations, and a willingness to engage in hands-on experimental validation.

Remuneration & Conditions

  • Financial Support: This fully funded studentship attracts a highly competitive, tax-free stipend of up to £25,000 per annum, guaranteed for four full years.
  • Timeline: The anticipated official start date for this PhD project is the 1st of October 2026.

How to Apply

  1. Ensure your academic CV is thoroughly updated, clearly highlighting your first-class or upper second-class honours degree in mechanical engineering.
  2. Prepare a compelling cover letter or personal statement detailing your specific interest in gas turbine transmission systems, wear modelling, and your motivation to work alongside Rolls-Royce.
  3. Informal inquiries and expressions of interest can be made directly via email to the lead researcher, Prof. Chris Bennett, at c.bennett@nottingham.ac.uk.
  4. Submit your formal application through the University of Nottingham's online portal before the strict closing date of 17th June 2026. Note that applications are accepted continuously until the post is filled, so early submission is highly encouraged.
