About the Unit
UNHCR’s Regional Representation is based in Canberra, and its mandate covers Australia, New Zealand, as well as 14 Pacific Islands Countries and Territories (PICTs). The External Relations Intern works strategically in support of UNHCR’s operational and communications objectives for this geographic area of responsibility, under the close supervision of the External Relations Officer.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the production of high-quality, compelling storytelling content for UNHCR’s platforms including social media.
- Assist with organizing events with partners for public visibility, such as World Refugee Day events.
- Undertake research and fact-checking for fact sheets, speeches, publications, and webpages.
- Support social media community management, content scheduling, and update distribution lists.
- Assist with meeting and mission scheduling, drafting bios, briefs, reports, and funding proposals.
- Respond to external queries from the general public, answer office phones, and monitor the public information email inbox.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must have completed at least two years of undergraduate or post-graduate studies in external relations, journalism, communications, international relations, or social science.
- Citizenship/Visa: All applicants MUST be Australian citizens or permanent residents at the time the application closes and must have valid Australian work rights to be considered.
Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
- Languages: Fluency in English is required.
- Skills: Excellent writing and editing skills, high aptitude in using Microsoft Office, and experience with social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn).
- Knowledge: A good understanding of Australian politics and media.
- Desirable: Previous experience in communications, content management systems (Drupal/WordPress), video editing, Canva/Adobe Premiere Pro, or lived experience of displacement.

Internship Conditions
