About the Role

The UNESCO Natural Sciences Sector takes a systemic, integrated approach to global implementation, drawing upon the complementary profiles of its science programmes to enhance skills and knowledge for the integrated management of natural resources. Guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the African Union's Agenda 2063, the sector focuses heavily on developing green economies and empowering Member States. As an intern, you will support the Sector's mission across various Divisions, learning the context of global policy-making and developing critical-thinking skills alongside top development teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the preparation and review of project documents, drafting notes, and preparing technical annexes.
  • Contribute to the elaboration of briefing notes and progress reports through dedicated data collection and research.
  • Support the Sector's communication and visibility exercises by designing and disseminating communication materials and updating relevant webpages.
  • Analyze and compile background data for potential partnerships, fundraising events, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support in the planning and organization of global events, workshops, and conferences.
  • Support the preparation of specific budgets, financial and accounting documents, and project evaluations.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 20 years old to apply.
  • Educational Status: You must meet ONE of the following criteria at the time of application:
    • Be enrolled in the 3rd (third) or final year of your Bachelor's degree.
    • Be currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD degree (or equivalent).
    • Have graduated with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree within the last 12 months.
    • Note for technical/vocational applicants: Must be in your last year of studies or have graduated within the last 12 months.
  • Desirable Fields of Study: Water science, hydrology, ecological science, earth sciences, basic sciences, engineering, and related natural sciences.

Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

  • Language Proficiency: Excellent command (written and spoken) of either English or French is required. Working knowledge of the other is a strong asset.
  • Computer Skills: Excellent knowledge of computer systems and standard office-related software.
  • Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as a team player in an international, multicultural environment.
  • Core Competencies: Accountability, Innovation, Knowledge sharing, Planning and organizing, Results focus, and Professionalism.

Benefits and Entitlements

  • Remuneration: UNESCO does not remunerate interns. There is no financial compensation for internship assignments.
  • Leave Policies: Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month, plus an additional 1 working day per complete month of the internship.
  • Insurance: UNESCO provides limited workplace insurance coverage against injury, illness, disability, or death incurred during and directly attributable to the internship execution.

  • Timed Assessment: During the application, you will be asked questions regarding your skills and competencies. You only have one hour to complete this process.
  • Language & Translation: You may only apply in English or French. Any documents not in these languages must be accompanied by an unofficial English or French translation.
  • Selection: If selected, hiring managers will contact you directly. If you do not hear back within six months, your application was not successful for this cycle.
