About the Role & Unit

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization, and environmental sustainability. Within UNIDO, the Sustainable Investments and Responsible Business Unit (IET/PST/SIB) works to foster responsible business conduct across local, regional, and global value chains. The unit induces responsible investments, facilitates cooperation between firms and policymakers, and leverages market signals to advance socially-minded, youth- and gender-responsive sustainable business practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct extensive desk-based research and data collection on trade shows in selected African countries via structured online searches and databases (e.g., UFI, AAXO, RECs, national chambers).
• Support the development and application of standardized survey mapping templates for trade show profiles, ensuring the inclusion of gender-responsive data and business-relevant indicators.
• Engage directly with trade show organizers to obtain missing information and verify the accuracy of the collected data.
• Review and analyze data on African trade shows to assess their potential relevance for German business delegations.
• Identify Germany-based trade shows aligned with the product, service, or technology portfolios of African companies, utilizing inputs from UNIDO ITPO Germany.
• Draft concise profiles of German trade shows, summarizing market relevance, thematic focus, and potential benefits for African delegations.
• Assist in conducting needs assessments for African organizers seeking to participate in German trade shows and help design tailored capacity-building activities.
• Prepare knowledge products, presentations, and briefs to communicate preliminary insights for internal and external consultations.

Eligibility Criteria

• Educational Status: Applicants must meet one of the following:
  • Be enrolled in a second-level university degree programme (master's or equivalent) or higher.
  • Begin the internship within one year of completing a second-level university degree.
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first degree programme (bachelor's or equivalent).
  • Begin the internship within one year of completing a first-level university degree.
• Field of Specialization: Trade and Investment Facilitation, Development Economics, International Affairs, or a closely related field.
• Institutional Accreditation: Only degrees from accredited institutions will be considered.

Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

• Language Skills: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
• Desirable Experience: Prior experience in trade show organization and in German-African cooperation is highly desirable and strongly preferred.
• Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in relevant software tools is expected. Familiarity with ArcGIS is considered a strong asset.

Internship Conditions & Benefits

• Financial Support: Interns receive a monthly stipend based on their duty station (Vienna, Austria).
