About the Role & Work Environment
The History of Parliament is an ambitious, authoritative research project creating a comprehensive account of parliamentary politics in England and Britain from their origins in the 13th century to the present day. Launched in 2022, the House of Lords 1640-60 project focuses on researching the 255 peers eligible to sit in the upper House during one of the most fascinating periods of British history. Since the relevant sources have already been digitized or photographed, this internship can be completed entirely remotely.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Read through a selection of manuscript and printed newsbooks of parliamentary proceedings from the 1640s to uncover new information about the House of Lords.
- Identify and note important details that are missing from the official records of the House of Lords, known as the Lords Journals.
- Create a comprehensive, word-searchable calendar of this newly discovered information.
- Publish a blog post on the History of Parliament website detailing your research experience and findings.
- Optionally, write a piece for an academic journal based on the internship research, with full support from the project team.
