About the Role & Research Labs
SAIC Cambridge is looking for exceptional interns to undertake a 6-month internship programme during 2026. Successful candidates will work within a world-class cross-disciplinary research centre, collaborating with top-tier researchers and engineers. The core aim of this internship is to publish research in premier conferences, file patents, share reproducible code with the broader AI community on GitHub, and contribute significantly to commercial tech transfers. Interns will be affiliated with one of three specialized labs and assigned senior mentors:
- Future Interaction Lab: Focuses on vision & language, multi-modal language models, large-scale model training, and vision-language-action models.
- Embedded AI Lab: Focuses on world models & physical AI, efficient foundation model architectures, Speech Recognition and Generation, and image/video generation models.
- Machine Learning/Data Intelligence Lab: Focuses on world models for planning & reasoning, Inverse Graphics, Inverse Physics, Meta-learning, and Neuro-Symbolic AI.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct cutting-edge research to develop state-of-the-art solutions to existing problems and propose novel research challenges considering real-world AI case studies.
- Publish findings in top-tier conferences and journals, such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, AAAI, ACL, InterSpeech, EMNLP, and MobiComm.
- Develop high-quality, scalable code with detailed documentation to support reproducible research in both local and international AI research communities.
- Collaborate closely with senior mentors to guide the generation of publications and maximize commercial impact.
Eligibility Criteria & Essential Qualifications
- Educational Status: Must be currently studying for a PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline (or just completing the degree).
- Publication Record: Must have at least one first-author publication in top conferences and journals (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, AAAI, InterSpeech, EMNLP, ACL, MobiComm).
- Technical Proficiency: Good command of computing concepts including algorithms, data structures, parallel/distributed computing, and optimization.
- Prototyping: Proven experience in quick, efficient prototyping utilizing Python and PyTorch.
Desirable Skills (Bonus Points)
- Experience and demonstrated output on Foundation Models research involving visual LLMs and/or Diffusion models.
- Experience in software engineering and development within a professional, corporate environment.
- Hands-on experience with the distributed GPU implementation of ML algorithms.
- Experience with the on-device implementation and optimization of ML algorithms.
