About the Role & Work Environment
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading UN agency in the field of migration, dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. IOM Netherlands' ERCOM Unit delivers accessible, audience-focused communication across web, social media, and press to inform migrants and stakeholders, support crucial programmes (such as AVRR/REAN and resettlement), and strengthen IOM’s public presence. All activities are guided by the human-centred, evidence-based storytelling principles of the IOM NL Social & Online Communication Strategy 2026. As an intern, you will report to the Senior Communications Associate and collaborate closely with the wider team to execute these dynamic digital strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Content Production: Draft, edit, and proof short and long-form content (including web news, stories, captions, and newsletters) in both Dutch and English, ensuring absolute accuracy and alignment with IOM branding.
- Social Media Management: Assist in planning editorial calendars; prepare copy, basic graphics, and video content; schedule, monitor, and report on performance across X, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.
- Analytics & Insight: Track agreed key performance indicators (KPIs) and compile short, actionable insights to inform content iteration.
- Website Support: Publish and update pages and articles using Content Management Systems (CMS), maintain links and visuals, uphold accessibility standards, and support newsletter production.
- Media Monitoring & Research: Scan relevant Dutch and European migration news and policy updates to draft succinct summaries and talking points for internal team use.
- Event & Campaign Support: Assist with communications surrounding events and outreach, handling copy, visuals, photo/video logistics, and live updates.
- Ethics & Safeguarding: Apply strict IOM standards for responsible communication, consent, data protection, and safeguarding in all public outputs.
Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications
- Educational Status: Candidates must be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor's), enrolled in a graduate programme, or be a recent graduate who will commence the internship within one year of graduation.
- Field of Study: Degrees in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Political/Social Sciences, Public Policy, or related fields are highly preferred.
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in both English and Dutch (oral and written) is strictly required and will be evaluated during the selection process. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset.
- Technical Skills: Excellent writing and editing skills, basic design capabilities (Canva/Adobe), familiarity with social media scheduling, and comfort using CMS platforms (such as Joomla or WordPress) are essential.
- Experience: Prior experience with NGO/public-sector communications, video/photo editing, or migration-related topics is highly advantageous.
Remuneration & Conditions
- Financial Support: Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset living costs. (Note: Interns receiving university scholarships or other financial remuneration are not eligible for this stipend).
- Insurance: IOM covers interns against occupational accidents and illnesses free of charge. However, interns are strictly responsible for securing their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses.
