About the Role & Work Environment

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), positioned within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), is a global center of excellence for statistical data and methodology. The internship is designed to be in-person and full-time (35 hours per week) at the New York duty station. However, depending on the situation of the successful candidate, the internship may offer a Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA) to be conducted fully remotely, in a hybrid format, or part-time to accommodate specific needs, such as G-4 visa purposes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work within various Branches of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD).
  • Report directly to the Chief of a Section or to a designated Statistician to assist with high-level data projects.
  • Draft compelling news articles and/or social media posts to communicate statistical findings to a broader audience.
  • Support the department's analytical, methodological, and capacity-building work in global statistics.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

  • Educational Requirements: Applicants should be enrolled in or have recently completed a relevant degree program aligned with statistics, economics, data science, or a related field.
  • Language Skills: English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is strictly required.
  • Additional Languages: Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered a strong advantage.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to draft clear news articles or social media posts is strongly desirable for this specific role.

Remuneration & Conditions

  • Financial Status: Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Logistics: All costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the sole responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Visas: Interns who are not US citizens or permanent residents may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
