About the Role & Work Environment

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) serves as the UN's regional hub, promoting cooperation among countries to achieve inclusive and sustainable development. This internship opportunity is located at the ESCAP Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia (SRO-ENEA) in the innovative smart-city of Songdo, Incheon, Republic of Korea. Interns will work a full-time schedule (five days a week, 40 hours total) in an immersive, in-person environment under the direct supervision of dedicated environmental affairs staff, gaining unparalleled insight into multilateral environmental diplomacy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Intern responsibilities will focus heavily on supporting the North-East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC), with a particular emphasis on Low Carbon Cities (LCC). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting comprehensive desk research on relevant Low Carbon City (LCC) topics to support the drafting and preparation of official documents and policy briefs.
  • Contributing substantively to the preparations for major environmental activities and intergovernmental meetings planned for 2026.
  • Assisting in data collection, analysis, and the synthesis of regional environmental trends.
  • Supporting the administrative and logistical coordination of NEASPEC initiatives and working group sessions.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

  • Educational Status: Applicants must be enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. programme, be in the final academic year of a bachelor's programme, or have graduated within the past year. An official certificate of enrollment or graduation will be required at a later stage.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in spoken and written English is strictly required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is considered an asset.
  • Technical Skills: Applicants must have a strong working knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and MS Teams.
  • Core Competencies: A demonstrated passion for environmental affairs, excellent analytical research skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural team are essential.

Remuneration & Conditions

  • Financial Status: This internship is strictly unpaid. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Living & Travel Expenses: All costs and arrangements associated with travel, visas, accommodation, health insurance, and daily living expenses are the sole responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring academic institution.
  • Visa Requirements: Successful candidates who are not citizens or permanent residents of the Republic of Korea must obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization prior to arriving. Candidates must discuss specific visa requirements with the office before accepting the offer.
