The UNU Biotechnology Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNU-BIOLAC) is one of 13 research and training institutes of the United Nations University. Based in Caracas, it promotes the use of biotechnology for sustainable development in the region by building capacities, creating knowledge, and coordinating research networks.
The Programme Coordinator reports to the Rector of UNU and manages the UNU-BIOLAC programme. Key responsibilities include:
- Leadership & Strategic Management:
- Manage the capacity building programme and administer grants to professionals in biotechnology.
- Oversee the direction, administration, and programming of UNU-BIOLAC.
- Manage, hire, and supervise personnel; manage the budget and reporting to donors.
- Resource Mobilisation:
- Strengthen resource mobilisation strategy to secure funding.
- Manage donor relations and networks.
- Partnerships & Representation:
- Establish relationships with the UN system, host government, and international partners.
- Represent UNU-BIOLAC in local and global fora to raise visibility.
- Knowledge Sharing:
- Facilitate the dissemination of knowledge products.
- Coordinate work with other UNU institutes, particularly in the Global South.
- Produce research supporting the ethical use of biotechnology.
- Education: Advanced university degree in a scientific discipline related to biotechnology. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
- Experience: At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in biotechnology or a related discipline with demonstrable leadership and management abilities.
- Language: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish are required.
The mandatory age of retirement for PSA holders is 65 years.
Candidates must hold an Advanced University Degree (Master's or higher) in Biotechnology or a related scientific discipline. A Ph.D. is highly preferred, along with a background of research and publications.
