About the Role & Work Environment
The UNDP Unit of Information Technology and Management (ITM) in Copenhagen is fundamentally responsible for supporting UNDP Country Offices worldwide with state-of-the-art ICT and Green Energy solutions. The Green Energy Civil/Structural Engineering Internship programme is specifically designed to enhance the academic life experience of passionate students, empowering them to become socially responsible, innovative, and environmentally conscious leaders. Operating out of the UN City in Copenhagen within an ISO 9001:2015, ISO 20000:2011, and ISO 27001:2013 certified unit, interns will gain real-time industry experience by working behind the scenes on the world’s leading clean energy and sustainability initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Actively participate in the collection of data and information related to green energy solutions across global Country Offices.
- Support the assessment of civil works and structural integrity related to renewable energy installations.
- Draft comprehensive business cases for renewable energy solutions, focusing heavily on hybrid solar PV systems, energy efficiency, and e-mobility.
- Assist in the installation of IoT (Internet of Things) energy sensors for assigned projects across the organization.
- Provide remote technical assistance and guidance on energy efficiency solutions to various Country Offices.
- Support the procurement team by conducting market research, compiling solicitation documents, and technically evaluating proposals from bidders.
- Assist with the daily monitoring and operations (O&M) of installed solar PV and e-mobility systems.
- Assist project managers during the remote management of renewable energy installations in various locations worldwide.
Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications
- Educational Status: Candidates must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree, the final academic year of a bachelor's degree, or have graduated within the last year with a degree specifically in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of structural analysis for foundation design and steel structures is required. Familiarity with design software (ETABS, Staad. Pro, Autodesk Robot) and energy software (HOMER, PV*Sol) is a major advantage.
- Renewable Energy Focus: Experience or deep knowledge in sizing Hybrid PV systems (with diesel generators), energy efficiency, and electric vehicles is highly desired.
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in written and spoken English is strictly mandatory. Knowledge of another UN language is considered an asset.
- Core Competencies: Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office 365 tools, display strong problem-solving and analytical skills, and possess the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural team.
Remuneration & Conditions
- Monthly Stipend: Where an intern is engaged in-person in Copenhagen and is not financially supported by any external institution or government, a monthly stipend of USD 1,000 is provided to help cover basic daily expenses like meals and transportation.
- Expenses: Except for the stipend, all other expenses—including travel to and from the duty station, accommodation, and necessary visas—must be borne by the intern.
- Health Insurance: Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the full duration of their assignment and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting.
