Human Rights Watch is an international human rights monitoring and advocacy organization known for its in-depth investigations, incisive reporting, and advocacy campaigns. The Asia Division focuses on monitoring human rights developments in the region, and this internship specifically focuses on domestic and international issues related to Japan.

The intern will focus on projects surrounding domestic and international issues of Japan. Ideally available part-time from April to September 2026, students will have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, workshops, and network with HRW staff and volunteers, applying academic skills in a professional setting.

• Research & Advocacy:
  • Assist with HRW research on domestic and international human rights issues related to Japan.
  • Assist with advocacy efforts on these issues.
  • Conduct desk research, analyze data, and organize advocacy efforts regarding issues in Asia and beyond.
• Engagement:
  • Attend external meetings with staff in the Asia Division.
  • Participate in other projects as assigned that match the student's interests and abilities.

• Education Status: Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students for the duration of the internship term.
• Work Authorization: Applicants must possess valid work authorization in Japan for the duration of the internship.
• Coursework: Students with relevant coursework in human rights are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme. A demonstrated strong interest in human rights is highly desirable.

• Languages: Advanced level proficiency in Japanese and English (both in writing and speaking) is highly desirable.
• Technical Skills: Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, internet applications) and internet research skills are essential.
• Soft Skills: Strong organizational skills, a proactive approach to projects, reliability, and strong attention to detail are required.

No Fee. Human Rights Watch does not charge any application, processing, or training fee.

• Stipend: Interns receive a gross stipend of 800 JPY per day (for lunch) for days spent in the office.
• Transportation: Reimbursed up to 2000 JPY per day for days spent in the office.
• Academic Credit: Students may arrange for academic credit from their institutions.
• Visa: HRW does not sponsor visas. Applicants must have valid work authorization in Japan.
